Overview

Main identification features orange and brown juvenile: orange + blue bars Dorsal rays XIV, 17-19; anal rays III,18-19; pectoral rays 17-18; lateral line weakly developed, about 50 scales in longitudinal series; a stout spine on lower edge of cheek. Most of body brownish, head dark brown; a broad bright orange area just behind head and caudal fin orange; small juveniles brownish orange with narrow blue bars on side and pair of similar bars on head, bars gradually become narrower and eventually disappear with increased growth. Size: reaches 20 cm. Occurs solitarily or in aggregations on rocky reefs. Depth: 0-30 m. Endemic to the Revillagigedo Islands, with stragglers at central Baja and the southern tip of Baja California (Cabo San Lucas) and Banderas Bay in the SE Gulf of California, and Clipperton Island. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed. Climate Zone: Northern Subtropical (Cortez Province + Sinaloan Gap); Northern Tropical (Mexican Province to Nicaragua + Revillagigedos); Equatorial (Costa Rica to Ecuador + Galapagos, Clipperton, Cocos, Malpelo).
