FAMILY ARGENTINIDAE

ARGENTINES

These small fishes have elongate, compressed, silvery bodies; large eyes; one dorsal fin plus a small adipose fin behind it above the anal fin; a small mouth, with the upper jaw lacking teeth; fins without spines; pectorals low on the sides and pelvics that are under (but behind the origin of) the dorsal fin.

The family occurs worldwide in tropical to temperate areas and has 2 genera with 19 species. Two species occur in the eastern Pacific, and are usually found in deeper waters.
