FAMILY RAJIDAE

SKATES, FANSKATES

Head, body and pectorals form a flattened rhomboidal or circular disc; tail slender, well demarcated from body, length <2X disc length; 2 small dorsal fins near rear of tail, with tail fin as a fold behind the second dorsal; eyes on top of head, with spiracles immediately behind; with body prickles covering upper surface, often with a row of thorns along midline; nostrils a little in front of mouth, with lobes from nostrils forming a curtain between them and mouth; pelvic fins with 2 lobes separated by a notch.

Skates occur worldwide in tropical and temperate seas; the family includes 18 genera and some 200 species. Four genera and 12 species occur in the tropical eastern Pacific, with 3 genera and 6 species of shallow water forms.
