FAMILY RHINOBATIDAE

GUITARFISHES

Guitarfishes are characterised by a large triangular head that incorporates the fused pectoral fins, and which tapers to a pointed or narrowly rounded snout tip. The eyes and spiracles are situated on the upper surface, while the mouth, nostril openings and gill slits are on the underside. The remainder of the body is more or less shark-like, with a pair of similar-sized dorsal fins on the back. The teeth resemble those of skates and sawfishes. They form low pavement-like bands in the jaws, but are not designed for crushing prey like the teeth of the myliobatid and rhinopterid rays. Guitarfishes feed on benthic invertebrates and small fishes, and are commonly encountered on sand or mud bottoms. They sometimes bury themselves below the surface when resting. The distribution of guitarfishes encompasses all temperate and tropical seas, from shallow inshore waters to depths down to 370 m. The family contains 7 genera and about 45 species, with 8 species in 3 genera in our region. Guitarfishes are considered harmless. All species are live-bearers but lack a placenta.
